Gill R.: "Went to Benares on my husbands birthday. Had the most wonderful evening. Started with a free glass of champagne - still not sure why but when we showed the Gourmet card the champagne appeared - and it would have been impolite to refuse now wouldnt it!....What can I say about the food except WOW...Some reviews on other sites have complained that this isnt like the Indian food they are used to but that is the joy of this restaurant, it isnt like anything you are used. to. Wonderfully special evening - rounded off by a lovely gesture from the staff who found out it was my husbands birthday and presented him with a signed cook book. Highly recommended."

Benares is a quiet oasis of calm just off the bustling Berkeley Square and the staff were attentive and helpful without any hint of pretension or us feeling watched over. We were offered both the a la carte menu and the prixe fixe menu (which is not eligible for the 25% off) - and on reflection we chose the prixe fixe along with the recommended wine pairings. The food was wonderful, with just the right balance of spice and heat to each dish - none of them were hot but the flavours came together exquisitely. The tandoori smoked trout starter melted in the mouth, and was the highlight of my meal. The matched wines were well thought out and knowledgeably presented. It was also nice to see the chef-patron Atul Kochhar at the bar talking to his staff. Looking at others around us, the other menu items looked equally delicious, and we intend to return and sample the a la carte menu next time."
